From the Harbour Entrance to the canal at the Airport the beach dune vegetation is being invaded by squatters.
Even the very centre of our suburb over the road from Bluff Towers Shopping Centre has a squatter camp with 13 "registered dwellings" according to the Department of Housing.
The ground pollution in every case is unbelievable!

Hello Dr Sutcliffe
SQUATTING ON COUNCIL LAND: GRAY FAMILY TRUST PROPERTY - BLUFF
The above land, situated in the valley between the two Bluff ridges, is held in Trust
by the Council on behalf of the Gray family. It is zoned for recreation and
education - hence the golf course and other sporting clubs.
A group of squatters has built 13 shacks on a part of this property behind the
municipal garden refuse site and adjacent to the Bluff Showgrounds. Despite
alerting the Land Invasion unit of their presence, nothing has been done.
Worse still, it has been established that a trade in stolen goods and drugs is
routinely conducted between these squatters and gangs from Austerville.
Understandably the local CPF, the Bluff Environmental Team, local residents and
myself are perturbed, particularly in the light of the Council's obligations
regarding invasions of Council land.
With regard to the latter, I refer to a Notice of Motion of mine approved by the
Council on 28 February 2002. The Housing, Land and Human Resources
Committee dealt with the issue on 18 March 2002 by referring to the Council's
Land Protection Policy as adopted in October 1999.
The relevant section, 4.3 found on page 4 noted, inter alia:
That officials were to gather evidence of the circumstances of the illegal
occupation and to make a general assessment of the profiles of those involved in
the occupation with a view to instituting legal proceedings for their eviction.
In terms of the environmental degradation that these illegal occupants have
caused and the criminal element that appears embedded with them, to say
nothing of the violation of land use management which their presence constitutes,
I would like to know when their eviction will take place as the resolution of this
matter has become urgent.
Kind Regards
Cllr Duncan Du Bois
